It is therefore necessary to have an effective and accurate assessment of the impactof earthquakes on existingstructures. Hanoi is the capitol and second largest city in Vietnam and contains many historical and important buildings. Previous studies suggest that Hanoi may be affected by earthquakes occurring along the Lai Chau - Dien Bien - Son La and Red River faults. Parameters of earthquakesthat couldoccur in Hanoi are studied using common methods (e.g. Campbell and Seed, etc.).Based on the data collected from the studies about some characteristics of the strongest earthquakes that can occur in the Hanoi area, this study presents an estimate of the possibility of liquefaction of soil layers in Hanoi during an earthquake incombinationwithexperimental results obtained under relevant geological and hydrogeological conditions.

ER -
